A team of researchers has invented the walking stick which helped to advance mobility for people with physical limitations, especially those with Parkinson's disease (PD) who have to endure a brain disorder that gradually deprive of their muscle control. Therefore, the laser-pointer walking sticks have been a new and safe limb for them. The laser beam guided by walking sticks increases visibility of users and reduces the risk of a person falling over caused by freezing of gait, a common symptom of PD.
This innovation was originated in 2010 supported by King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and funded by the Thai Red Cross Society. Over the years, the centre has adjusted the device to facilitate a wider range of users and their walking characteristics. Additionally, an upgraded version is expected to be launched in February, 2020.
